A "Shelters" programme at Bishops Wood Centre has been designed to support the QCA Unit on shelters. An excellent visit if your school is close enough, but there may well be a similar facility nearby wherever in the world you live. This WebQuest has been designed to supplement and support a "hands on" visit to Bishops Wood, but may equally be used on its own as an investigative project.

Shelters Visit.
After examining a range of materials and evaluating their suitability for use in buildings, the class visit and evaluate a range of shelters including a Saxon Hall, Straw-bale house, gazebo and teepee. They record how materials are used and joined for maximum stability and effectiveness, using digital cameras and notebooks. They then work in teams to design and build waterproof shelters using natural materials from the woodland and man-made materials which they purchase using "cheque-books".
