Where do we settle?

You need your map of the Saxon Village to do this task.

Below are 7 points for you to think about when you site your village. Give each place a tick in the chart at the bottom of the page. Then add up your ticks to see which is the best site.

1.
Nearness to the main river.
2.
Nearness to a stream. You need fresh water for drinking and washing clothes. The main river is muddy.
3.
Nearness to land which can be farmed. The village must have good land to grow barley, wheat and rye.
4.
Nearness to woodland. You will want timber for building your huts and for firewood. Animals, particularly pigs, can live in the forest.
5.
Avoidance of boggy ground. This cannot be farmed or drained. But don't go too far away, as you can catch ducks, moorhen and geese - welcome food in hard times.
6.
A good defensive site. Try to choose a spot you can easily defend against enemies.
7.
Nearness to a ford.
