Planning Cerdic's Village

Now that you have chosen a site for the village you must make plans to organise the huts.

Cerdic is your leader and he will need a large hall for himself and his Thanes, but what of the other huts for the 10 families who are coming? Each family will need a hut and they will be arranged around the main Hall. Mark Cerdic's Hall at position "C" for this exercise, and arrange the other huts around it. Now go on to the next 6 jobs....

1.
You will now need to clear land for farming, so that you can plough, harrow and sow crops. You can clear woodland up to 1500 metres from the village, but on only one side of the river. In pencil on your map draw a circle 3000 metres across, with Cerdic's Hall at it's centre. Remember to check the scale! The fields cannot be on marsh land, nor land on the other side of the river, but need to be quite close to the village.
2.
Beyond the fields you can leave some of the clearing as meadows. Here cows and oxen will graze, and grass will grow to make hay.
3.
When you have marked in the fields and meadows, divide the fields into blocks. Put five strips into each block and give one block to each family. Cerdic's land will be closest to the village, and he will have five blocks because he is the leader. Each family's block is called a 'Hide'.
4.
Now choose one crop for each strip - wheat, rye, barley, peas, beans - and colour in the strips to show the crops grown. You will need to put in a key to show which crop is shown by each colour.
5.
The villagers will need a track to reach the river and to trade with neighbouring villages, and Cerdic will need to keep in touch with other Saxon leaders. Draw the track from the ford to the huts, and continue it over Cerdic's Hill and on the other side of the river. The North Pasture is the best grazing land, so you will need a track to there as well.
Did you get there - hope you did!
