The Task

Your task is to work with a friend or in a group, to write a newpaper report possibly in the style of Sherlock Holmes in Victorian times, which examines whether Edith Houghland fell or was pushed to her death in February 1908.

During this task some of the work will have to be done away from the computer in your English lessons or for homework.  (Your teacher will tell you how much time you have to process the information, and whether you work in pairs or in a group.)  The important thing is that you will be assessed on the ICT aspects of this quest, nevertheless the content is still very important.

There is a lot of work to do before going onto the computer.  It might be an idea to tick off the following jobs as you do them.  If you are in a group you could share the jobs, and then get together at the end of the research phase.

Read this, and decide who is doing what.

  • Have a look at the photographs of her possessions that were in the travelling case - you may find lots of clues.
  • Look at the 'new' evidence in the two witness reports, and see if anything seems a bit 'fishy'
  • To help you decide which of the evidence is suspicious, you may find the 'Suspicious or not' sheet helpful.
  • There are several web sites to help you with the type of language and layout which was used in those times.
  • If you want help to sort out the two opposing points of view, there is a writing frame available on the teacher's introduction sheet.
