You
can find out how many hydropathic establishments there were
in 1891.
This
might mention someone you have already found out about. Click
on the 'Famous 19th Century People Who Wrote About or Visited
Matlock Bath' . Did he visit or write about it I wonder?
John
Smedley was a very important part of the introduction of hydropathy
to Matlock. Under 'Hydros
and Hydropathy' you can find lots of information about him.
Read the first three paragraphs and the extract from Kelly's directory.
N.B.
Look at the advert again. It took me a long time to realise that the
description under the advert for Matlock House was about Smedley's
Establishment not Matlock House.
John
Smedley again. Paragraphs
2-5 on this site gives good information about him, especially
how he became interested in hydropathy.
