Database Task

Create a questionnaire for a database for finding out about what interests a variety of readers.  You will need to consider different age ranges.

The purpose of this task is to help you to consider what different readers enjoy reading, which will be valuable information for your own writing.

Database Questionnaire

Consider giving details of:

  • Age
  • Favourite genres
  • Characters
  • Story Settings
  • etc

(‘etc’ means that the list may not be complete, and it's up to you to think of anything else you might want to include.)

You will need to decide on some suitable field names so you can include data for all the headings above, plus any other useful information, which will help your writing.

Here is the best, and most important advice you will ever get for databases;
Before you rush to enter data - STOP - and think

carefully about what you might want to GET OUT OF IT. Set up questions (these will become your field headings) in such a way that you WILL BE ABLE TO RETRIEVE information in whatever form you may need.

e.g. You might want to sort out the most popular genres of your readers.

So now create your questionnaire. Don't forget the purpose of the exercise. Penguin Publishers may also use your database for information to see what interests readers.

Think once more before you leap into action though. Do you want the answer to be simple "Yes, it is suitable" (or "No, it isn't") or do you want to include a bit more detail. e.g. Suitability for children might be broken down into two or three age groups, because what suits you at 12 or 13 would obviously not suit a 6 year old. It's your database --- so you decide. Keep the users in mind!
